Botanical Description
Phyllanthus odontadenius is an annual to perennial plant with stems that often become more or less woody and persist for more than one year. It can grow 100 cm tall. Leaves distichous, with petioles up to 0.1cm long, lamina oblong to lanceolate, 1-2 x0.5-0.9 cm. Flower axillary, male clustered, female flowers usually solitary. Fruits trilobite-subglobose, up to 0.2 cm in diameter.
Medicinal Use
The leaves are eaten to cure hiccups,. A stem extract is used to treat diarrhea and cholera. The root is used in treatment of gonorrhea. Alcohol extract of leaves and stems reduced castor oil induced diarrhea in mice. A water extract of the whole plant inhibited DNA polymerase of hepatinavirus. The plant cures also malaria.
