Botanical Description

Leonotis nepetifolia is an annual or short- lived perennial plant growing from 1-3 m tall. The stem is branched  at the upper nodes only and the plant has an easily uproot about 10 cm long, with a tuft of white to yellowish hairs at the leafnodes. Leaves opposite, petiolate, ovate. 3-20 cm long, covered in short hairs and sessile glands more densely so below; margin crenate-dentate. Flowers in 2-5 (7) subspherical inflorescence per branch, separated by prolonged internodes. Corolla 119-38 mm long covered in orange hairs with 3 fringes of hairs inside at the base of the tube.

 

Medicinal Use

: In Rwanda, the leaves are used to treat pneumonia, anthrax and syphilis. The plant Has long been used in traditional medicine as a treatment for  fevers, headaches, malaria, dysentery and snakebites. It has an effect on the uterus depending on the dose  it will stimulate or suppress menstruation. In Trinidad it is a common cold, fever,  and asthma remedy. Roots treat asthma and bronchitis, fever, and poisoning. Seeds are also used iin treating burns. The whole plant is used in treating menstrual pains Flowers ash is applied to burns and treat other skin diseases. Leaves are used for rheumatism and act as spasmolytic, anticancerous, antidermatophytic and mild anthelmintic..According to Kashangirwa R. Leonotis nepetefolia is involved in ths stabilization of blood sugar for diabetic patients
