Botanical Description

Portulacca oleracea is  succulent, annual herbaceous, and erect or decumbent up to 30 cm high. Stems are cylindrical up to 30 cm long, 2-3 mm in diameter, green or red, swollen at the nodes, smooth glabrous apart from the leaf axils, and diffusely branched and the internodes ar 1.5- 3.5 cm in length longPersiane leaves are alternate or subboposite, flat fleshy having variable shapes,  obovate, 1.5 cm long, 0.5- 2 cm across, obtuse or slightly notched at the apex  tapering at the base, sessile or indistinctly petiolate, glabrous, smooth, and waxy on the upper surface with intill margin, small stipule and cluster of hair, up to one mm long. Leaves  are egg to spatula shaped shaped, succulent, and stalkless or have very short stalks, about 5-30 mm long, and  sometimes their edges are retinged. Leaves are  green or green with red margin.

Medicinal Use

Roots are used for snake bites treatment, fresh roots may be chewed, or pounded and soaked in water and applied on to wounds and burns.

Other Use

edible plant.  Portulaca oleracea may be eaten as a leaf vegetable. It can be used in salad, that is to say raw. The plant has a  excellent nutritional value.
