Botanical Description

Liana up to several meters long with tendrils , pubescent. Leaves  withovate lamina, 4-9 x 2.5- 44.5 cm, rounded to cordatte at base and acuminate at apex. Inflorescence thyrsic, cymes 3-10 flowered. Flowers with petals and sepals 0.1cm long. Whitish to greenish-white.Enrolled tendril vine, covered with long brown hairs, young branches covered with a brown tomentum. Stipulate leaves, spindly brown petioles, covered wiyh a tomentum. Round Oval to cordate leaf blade .

 

Medicinal Use

From the leaves of Vernonia pogosperma has been isolated a novel steroidal sapogenin pogosterol. In combination of medicinal plants, Mitari Emmanuel a TMP from the Western Province of Rwanda uses maceration of crushed leaves of Vernonia pogosperma with Cassia didymobotrya, Maesa lanceolata, Senecio angulatus, Terminalia mollis, and other plants to treat spirits in diseased people.
