Botanical Description

Shrub to a small tree often sarmentaceous of 2- 10 m high. Young branches more or less pubescent strewn with lenticels. Compound  imparpinnateleaves of 6-20 cm long provided with petioles of 1-2.5 cm long. $ or 8 alternate leaflets on each side of the axis. The leaf blade is elliptic to oval lanceolate, asymetricat the base. Inflorescence made up with   long panicles of 35 cm long. White flowers. The fruits are berries.

 

 

Medicinal Use

Pounded roots are put in soup and given to the woman in order to make the delivery easy. Also after two days having given birth she drinks the decoction to cleanse the uterus of blood. Roots prepared in the same way are highly recommended for headache, malaria, influenza, and indigestion. The roots may simply be chewed in the last case. A decoction oof roots is taken by women to hasten lactation after childbirth.  A decoction of roots is taken three times a day for the treatment of syphilis. Ayinkamiye Sarah a tradipractician in Kirehe district said crushed leaves of Clausena anisata are used in the treatment of liver diseses in young children. This treatment is also used by Mitali Emmanuel, a traditional herbal medicine practitioner in the Western Province.
