Botanical Description

The plant is aliana with a woody rootstock. The lraves are subpeltate, ovate-cordate and coverd in grayish indumentums, mucronate at the apex; flowers axillary or in false raceme, sexes separate; fruits green, turning bright red when rippe, held in pubescent leaf=-like bracts.

A straggly vine which can reach 9 m long. The stump is ligneous and the stem is ligneous or herbaceous. The leaves are subpeltate  with petioles of

 2-4.5 cm long, striate, pubescent to tomentose fixed at the leaf blade base. The leaf blade  of 4-12 cm long and 4-13 wide is largely oval to cordate or narrowly  and profoundly cordate at the base. Inflorescence is a recemose made up of small cymes of 5-15 cm long.1

Medicinal Use

The maasai people of Kenya use Cissampelos mucronatato treat malaria and it has been reported to be used for relief of abdominal and rheumatic pains, as a febrifuge, as diuretic, for prevention of abortions, and against gonorrhea, leprosy, stomach pains. Its leaves are  used in skin ailments, burns, eye trouble,wounds, fever and cold.1
